What is Girls’ Day and why is it important?
Girls’ Day is an annual event that takes place in Germany to encourage schoolgirls between the ages of 10 and 18 to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), in which the percentage of women is currently below 40%.
At AutoScout24, we believe that diversity and inclusion are essential for innovation and success. We want to support and empower girls to become the future leaders and creators of the digital world. That’s why we participated in Girls’ Day 2024 and invited 16 girls aged 10 to 14 to our offices in Munich and Düsseldorf to learn more about what we do and how we do it.
What did we do on Girls Day?
We had a full day of fun and educational activities planned for our guests. Here are some of the highlights:
Welcoming Session
We began the day with a welcoming session and an overview of our company. From there, we turned the spotlight on the inspiring women from different roles, including data scientist, talent acquisition specialist, and software engineer. Each of them shared insights into their daily responsibilities and their professional journey. These stories were not only informative but also deeply inspiring, showcasing the diverse paths women can take to achieve their career goals. We ended this session with an ice-breaking game, and a tour of the office to show our working spaces.
Coding Workshop
After the tour, we had a hands-on workshop, where we introduced the girls to coding using scratch. We were impressed by their creativity and enthusiasm, and by the end of the workshop, they had built some amazing projects that they were very proud of.
Show and Tell
Before the end of the workshop, everyone got to showcase their projects. Some built games, while others built stories. After the show and tell, we got to have some donuts and cupcakes and ended the day with feedback. We also gave them some goodies and certificates of participation, and thanked them for joining us.
What did we learn from Girls’ Day?
We had a wonderful time hosting Girls’ Day at AutoScout24, and we hope that the girls had a memorable and inspiring experience as well. We learned a lot from them, and here are some of our key takeaways:
- Scratch is a good platform to help kids learn to code. It helps them to learn basic coding terms and also to have fun while building their very own game or movie.
- Some of the girls were very quiet at first. Nice ice-breaking games helped to ease the distance between everyone.
- A little guidance to make their project more challenging is very helpful. They were very proud of what they could achieve.
We are glad to have participated in Girls’ Day 2024, and we hope that we have made a difference in the lives of the girls who visited us. We also hope that we have contributed to the larger goal of Girls’ Day, which is to promote gender equality and diversity in STEM and beyond.
We’re already looking forward to the next Girls’ Day on April 3rd, 2025. If you’re interested in hosting an event, remember to post your ad in advance to spread the word. For those who want to participate, keep an eye on the official page for registration details. Let’s continue to inspire and empower each other every day.
See you next year!
